Pre and Post Treatment

Before Endodontic Treatment

This procedure will be performed using local anesthesia. There are usually no restrictions after the procedure concerning driving or returning to work. A doctor is available for consultation at all times should a problem arise after your treatment.

Continue all medications for blood pressure, diabetes, thyroid problems and any other conditions as recommended by your physician. If there is a question, please call our office prior to your appointment.

Please eat a full breakfast or lunch as applicable.

If you have been advised by your physician or dentist to use antibiotic premedication because of mitral valve prolapse (MVP), heart murmur, hip, knee, cardiac or other prosthesis, or if you have rheumatic heart disease, please make sure you are on the appropriate antibiotic on the day of your appointment.

Post-Treatment Care Instructions 

What to Expect:
• Tenderness in the treated area or jaw is normal for a few day
• Numbness lasts a few hours—avoid eating until it wears off.
• Mild swelling is possible. Contact us if swelling is significant.

Do’s and Don’ts:
• Avoid chewing or biting on the treated tooth until treatment is complete.
• Once the numbness has worn off, you may chew food on the other side.
• There are no restrictions on liquids, You may drink fluids immediately.

Call Us Immediately If You Experience:
• Swelling inside or outside your mouth.
• Severe or returning pain.
• Allergic reactions (rash, itching).
• An uneven bite.

Next Step
• Attend your next appointment with us to complete your root canal treatment. Rescheduling may delay healing and require additional work to resolve the infection.

After Microsurgical Treatment

Post-Operative Instructions for Endodontic Surgery

Thank you for trusting us with your care. Please follow these post-operative instructions to ensure optimal healing and minimize discomfort:

Pain Management
1. For moderate pain:
– Take ibuprofen 600 mg (e.g., Advil or Motrin) AND acetaminophen 500 mg (e.g., Tylenol) every 6 hours as needed.
– Do not exceed the recommended daily dosages.
2. For severe pain that cannot be controlled with the above regimen:

Oral Hygiene

1. Starting the day after surgery, use chlorhexidine mouthwash (0.12%) twice a day (morning and evening) for one week. Swish gently for 30 seconds and spit out.
2. Avoid brushing or flossing the surgical area until instructed otherwise.
3. You are encouraged to brush and floss your other teeth as usual to maintain good oral hygiene.

Dietary Instructions

1. For the first four days after surgery, only consume liquids such as broths, smoothies, or clear juices. Avoid anything hot, spicy, or acidic.
2. Gradually reintroduce soft foods after the fourth day, as tolerated.

Additional Guidelines

– Avoid smoking, alcohol, and vigorous rinsing, as these can interfere with healing.
– Limit physical activity for the first few days to avoid unnecessary strain.
